Biography of Stephen T. Griffin
LT, USN, CHC

Chaplain Stephen Griffin grew up in the Washington D.C. area. In June, 2000 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. After graduating Recruit Training, Paris Island, he was stationed at Camp Pendleton with Landing Support Battalion, 1st Marine Division.

In June, 2001 Chaplain Griffin volunteered to join the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit to serve as a Landing Support Specialist and was deployed with the MEU in June, 2002. In February, 2003 he deployed for a second time with the 11th MEU in response to Operation Iraqi Freedom. Later, during Operation Enduring Freedom, Chaplain Griffin volunteered once again and deployed for the third time in his four year enlistment. He was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps in June, 2004 after achieving the rank of Sergeant.

After his time in the Marine Corps, Chaplain Griffin attended San Diego Christian College where he earned his BA in Biblical Studies with a minor in Psychology. He earned master’s degrees in Biblical Studies, Religious Studies and Divinity from Southern California Seminary. Throughout his time in college and seminary, Chaplain Griffin served on the Pastoral staff at Shadow Mountain Community Church as the College and Young Adult Pastor.

Chaplain Griffin received his endorsement from the Southern Baptist Convention in 2009 and was commissioned in January, 2010. He accepted orders to Commander Naval Surfaces Forces Atlantic Ministry Center (CNSLMC) where he reported in April, 2010. In May, 2010 Chaplain Griffin deployed for six months on a counter-piracy mission with USS ELROD (FFG-55) where he served as the ships Chaplain. In May, 2011 Chaplain Griffin volunteered for a ten month deployment as an Individual Augmentee in support of the Warrior Transition Program, Navy Central Forward Command, Kuwait. Upon his return, Chaplain Griffin served as the Training Officer for the CNSLMC while providing Chaplain support for Destroyer Squadron Two.

Currently Chaplain Griffin serves as an Installation Chaplain for Marine Corps Base and Marine Corps Air Station, Camp Pendleton.

Chaplain Griffin has received the Navy Commendation Medal, the Navy Achievement Medal (three awards) in addition to various unit citations and campaign awards. He is happily married to his lovely wife, Julie, and has two children.
