Sergeant Major Bo H. Kim enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and reported to Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD), Paris Island, SC. Upon completing recruit training, Sergeant Major Kim attended Marine Combat Training at Camp Geiger, NC and to Field Artillery Training School at Fort Sill, OK for duty as the field artillery cannon crewman.
After completing a successful tour of duty in Camp Pendleton with 1st Battalion, 11th Marines and 2nd Battalion, 11th Marines, Sgt Kim attended Marine Corps Martial Arts Instructor Course and to Drill Instructor School in MCRD San Diego, CA. Sergeant Kim was assigned to 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, and held the billets of Drill Instructor, Senior Drill Instructor, and Series Chief Drill Instructor. Sergeant Kim was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant.
After three years of Drill Instructor assignment, SSgt Kim reported to 5th Battalion, 11th Marines. SSgt Kim was promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant and received orders to 3D Marine Division, Okinawa, Japan. He was assigned as division G-3 assistance operations chief and training chief. Gunnery Sergeant Kim served as battle planning SNCOIC in support of Joint Operation Command under CENTCOM and was assigned to OCS in Quantico, VA where he served as Sergeant Instructor, Platoon Sergeant, Academics Instructor, and Drill Master. GySgt Kim was promoted to the rank of First Sergeant and served under 1st Battalion, 4th Marines and Reconnaissance Training Company, School of Infantry (West).
Sergeant Major Kim’s personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Commendation Medal, Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal with gold star in lieu of a fourth award, Joint Achievement Medal and Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal with gold star in lieu of a second award.
